Scouting continues...

Owner sounds like he's working through some trepidation, but he asked me to call back tomorrow to set a start date!

He mentioned a limited run, weekly for a handful of weeks, like a tryout stage. Which sounds a little negative at first blush but Hell, they're all tryouts!

I think that once it gets going it will be fine. The first night of an open mike is usually well-attended (and good for the venue to see), and the money is made after that, getting and keeping an audience.

I told him I would print up flyers, and I meant it. Same with social media. There are a few other niceties I can bring to the table, but I haven't promised them, so I am free to do as I like. I would love nothing more than to have a kickass open mike spot that I can throw energy and equipment at and give the venue, crowd and comedians more than they paid for. We'll see...

Scouting for an open mike

Hey hey -

I got back this afternoon from scouting a location for an open mike here in Stockton. I took my nephew and associate with me so he could get an eyeful. We both agree, it's pretty not-bad!

It's got a wide-open floor plan (although not a separate room for comedy; pity), a wood-grained country/rock vibe and a pretty good location. Staff and owner seem pretty clear-headed so far, which I appreciate.

I spoke to the owner last week briefly; I talk to him tonight about specifics. Most of the comics I talk to these days agree: Stockton needs a new, reliable open mike room. I hope it works out.
